Adalberto da Costa Júnior: “In Angola, the head of government himself encourages corruption”

Adalberto Costa Júnior, passing through Portugal, gave an interview to the Portuguese daily where he states that “in Angola, the Head of Government himself encourages corruption”.

Very critical in relation to the administration of the Angolan President, the leader of UNITA and the opposition says that “João Lourenço is showing himself in his true dimension of authoritarianism without limit”, doing things that were not seen even under José Eduardo dos Santos.

Elected president of UNITA in November last year, Adalberto Costa Júnior had everything but a normal first year as an opposition leader in Angola, due to the consequences of the covid-19 pandemic that allowed the Government to postpone the creation of autarchies and local elections.

“The most strategic element in fostering corruption is public procurement without competitions,” said Adalberto Costa Júnior, in an interview with Público, who continued, “this is the bulk of the thefts worldwide. And it is precisely here that João Lourenço is showing us that he is embracing this incentive, encouraging corruption. Because it does not do public procurement with competitions, with the necessary transparency ”, to conclude, and because I was talking to a Portuguese newspaper, that this in Portugal gave the government resignation, immediately.

“In Angola, today, those who want to persecute are fought and a number of other large-scale corrupt people are protected,” he said in an interview with Público. He also says, the leader of the largest opposition party, who “regrettably has evidence” that the Head of Government (João Lourenço) himself encourages corruption.

And Costa Júnior explains how: “The President of the Republic who has the most important element of his mandate, according to him, the Minister of State, from his cabinet, has an element accused of corruption, with evident indicators of proof of corruption, and does not even subject him to the investigation? ”asks the UNITA leader, who says he cannot understand how a minister of state“ receives the purchase of goods for the police as a minister, in violation of the law, and that the contract has been signed by the President of the Republic ”, for all this, Adalberto Costa Júnior considers“ that the fight against corruption is “unfortunately, limited”.
