Angola: Suspension of Adriano Manuel continues to divide class and authorities

The compulsive suspension of doctor Adriano Manuel, in July, continues to cause a lot of friction between the medical profession and the ministry of Silvia Lutukuta.

At the heart of the crisis is the issue of suspension and disciplinary proceedings against the president of the doctors’ union, for reporting the death of 19 children in less than 48 hours at the Pediatric Hospital of Luanda, allegedly due to a lack of professionals and ventilators.

In addition to the suspension, Manuel lost all benefits and was exonerated from the post of head of hospital infection control at the Pediatric Hospital Luís Bernardino.

Union-affiliated doctors say the situation is so unfair and unacceptable in a democracy, as his colleague criticized a serious situation that could raise the infant mortality rate.

Doctors requested the cancellation of the suspension, but there was no response from the authorities.

This Saturday, doctors carried out a march in Luanda to demand justice.

Franscico Domingos, director of the Pediatric Hospital, defended himself claiming that there were sufficient reasons for the disciplinary proceedings.
