Argentina: Diego Maradona dies after cardiorespiratory arrest

The Argentine idol had been admitted to the hospital on November 2, just days after turning 60, for brain surgery. He finishes discharge 10 days later to start treatment against alcoholism.

Because of the recovery, Maradona was again in charge of Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata. Maradona leaves five children and four grandchildren. According to Maradona’s own lawyer, he would still have three more children, not a second.

Considered one of the best players of all time, the Argentine star began a career with Argentinos Juniors. He still had a lot of prominence with the shirts of Boca Juniors, Barcelona, and Napoli. In the Argentine team, the number 10 shirt was the great name of the conquest of the second world championship in the 1986 World Cup.

“Until always, Diego. It will be eternal in every heart of the football planet ”, wrote the profile of the Argentine national team on Twitter.

The World Cup

Maradona made his debut for Argentina in 1977 at the age of 16. And even though he was already an ace, he ended up not being called up for the 78 World Cup, at home, which registered the first Argentine title.

The success at the World Cup came eight years later, in an anthological performance at the Mexico Cup. Maradona led Argentina to the second championship and scored two goals that made history: one dribbling the entire defense of England, and the other with the “Hand of God”, also against the English.

Maradona had yet another chance to be world champion. In 1990, after eliminating Brazil, he led Argentina to the final against Germany but ended up being defeated.

The ace still made his farewell to the World Cup lawns in 1994, but it was in a melancholy way. At the United States World Cup, Maradona was caught in the doping test.
