“The Banquet”: Will TPA address the corruption charge to Edeltrudes Costa?

The series of reports by the Public Television of Angola (TPA) on corruption, “O Banquete”, has given a lot to talk about. UNITA deputy expects TPA to address the Edeltrudes Costa case, João Lourenço’s “right hand”.
“O Banquete”, a series of reports from the Public Television of Angola (TPA) on corruption, continues to generate negative and positive reactions. This Monday (30.11), completes a week since the exhibition of the first chapter, which has given us a lot to talk about.

On social networks, there are those who praise the initiative, but there are also those who understand that the “banquet” has not been well served.

The journalist and analyst Ilídio Manuel explains that “a certain depth in these matters is lacking”. “From a journalistic point of view, the work is not being [done] in the best way, since the adversary is not proceeding. There is no attempt”, he said.

For Nelito Ekuikui, deputy of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), the largest Angolan opposition party, there is nothing new in the data presented in the reports. The representative of that political formation says that he notes a certain operation of “political charm” in the articles.

“We know perfectly well everyone who has squandered the public purse. We know what they did to our money. Unfortunately, these people still continue to live at the expense of the Angolan people ”, he accuses.

The contradictions of João Lourenço

The deputy also accused the Angolan President, João Lourenço, of wanting to “justify that he is fighting corruption”. He “wants to justify the moralization of society. There is a great contradiction here”, he stressed.

An example of contradiction, according to Nelito Ekuikui, is the fact that until now, João Lourenço has not commented on his cabinet director, Edeltrudes Costa. Still, the politician is still waiting for a “banquet” on this issue.

“Edeltrudes Costa is much more exposed. We all recently followed a TVI report that accused him of crimes of corruption, trafficking influences in President João Lourenço’s mandate, and so far we haven’t heard anything at all”, he complains.

What about the BESA case?

One of the last episodes brought to light the intricacies of the China International Fund (CIF). The journalist Ilídio Manuel says that people are also waiting for a “banquet” on the case of Angola Espírito Santo Bank (BESA), for example.

“People question, for example, whether TPA will have the courage to address issues that have to do with the main collaborators of the President of the Republic accused of corruption, such as Edeltrudes Costa,” he said.

“Another issue that has generated controversy has to do with the bad credit that certain entities, including the President of the Republic, made to BESA bank”, points out the journalist.

DW Africa tried unsuccessfully to listen to the TPA leadership on the criticisms.
